Am 8. Februar gibt es zudem ein Gala-Dinner im Badrutt’s Palace, an dem die Profis teilnehmen – eine beson- dere Gelegenheit, sich und die Sport-Stars näher kennenzulernen. „Die ganze Cricket-Welt wird ins Engadin kommen – von England über Indien, Südafrika, Australien bis in die Karibik.“ Zudem sind TV-Übertragungen in die wichtigsten Cricket-Länder geplant. „Das spricht allein in Indien ein Millionenpublikum an“, freut sich Vijay Singh. Für den Organisator ist St. Moritz der perfekte Austragungsort. „Hier gibt es nicht nur einen gewissen Glamour, sondern zugleich grosse Offenheit und Fachkenntnis – nicht zuletzt wegen der vie- len Gäste aus England und anderen Nationen, die sich für Cricket begeistern“, sagt Singh. Diese kosmopolitische Atmosphäre hat St. Moritz schon seit mehr als 150 Jahren. Damals versprach Johan- nes Badrutt einigen englischen Sommerurlaubern, er werde ihre Reisekosten übernehmen, falls sie nicht auch den Dezember hier im Engadin geniessen würden. Die Gäste liessen sich auf die Wet- te ein und waren so begeistert, dass sie bis Ostern blieben. Auch Alexander Mackay vom Verband Cricket Switzerland schwärmt zu- frieden: „St. Moritz hat eine Magie, die sehr schwer nachzuahmen ist. Actually, it’s a classic summertime pleasure, though it is only in St. Moritz that a spectacular winter version of the sport has now also become estab- lished: ice cricket. The rules are the same as those of conventional cricket; the new challenge is dealing with the pitch conditions. In place of the usual grass area Lake St. Moritz serves as the playing surface. Amateur teams have been competing against one another on the lake since 1988. At the “St. Moritz Ice Cricket” tournament, professionals from the leading cricket nations will be lining up for the first time. The organiser of the two-day “St. Moritz Ice Cricket” tournament is Vijay Singh. As the son of an Indian father and a Swiss mother, this 40-year-old is almost predestined to initiate this unique event. The owner of the VJ Sports agency loves the dyna- mism, tactics and precision of cricket – and also has a soft spot for winter sports. He himself has played in the “Cricket on Ice” tour- nament, the amateur version of the event. “It was very relaxed and really great fun”, he says, looking back on his involvement. Yet his ambitions were bigger: for over ten years, Singh has been mulling over the idea for an event with pros.
