// e Audacious men who transform themselves into living torpedoes. Head first, they thunder down the 1,214-metre-long track. Reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h. Razor-sharp runners cut into the ice. Me- tal rakes attached to the shoes of the rider prevent the relentless to- boggan from veering off the track as they manoeuvre using their bo- dyweight. All that lies between the rider and the unforgiving ice of the track are a few centimetres and a slimline skeleton sled. Hope- fully, the next bend will be negotiated! The fifth of the ten bends – the Shuttlecock – is regarded as the most capricious. It is here on this left-hand bend that one in fourteen starters fly from their sleds into the bales of hay by the track. Riders who put on a display of aerial acrobatics here gain entry to the “Shuttlecock Club”, which entitles them to wear a red neck tie in the traditional “St. Moritz To- bogganing” gentleman’s club. Whether a descent ends in a crash – a so-called “Cresta Kiss” – or is successfully completed, it is always over rather more quickly than it took to summon up the courage to tackle the legendary Cresta Run. H E A D F I R S T I N T O A N A D V E N T U R E This thrilling sport is regarded as the predecessor of the Olympic discipline of Skeleton and has been practised since 1884 on an ice track between St. Moritz and Cresta, a neighbourhood of the village of Celerina. The opportunity to flirt with danger, thrills and speed are what make the Cresta Run such as an enticing prospect, attrac- ting a fresh cohort of fearless riders to the start line every year. And every time, the atmosphere is the same: a mixture of excitement, trepidation, respect and anticipation. The spectators offer their best wishes. Instructions and tips are given – a matter of honour for every club member, ensuring the future of the next generation of Cresta heroes. Then the start signal sounds. The rider picks up speed and hurtles down the ice channel. Anyone who makes it to the finish line with their sled is above all one thing: happy. And hooked. For a Cresta Run is far more than an exclusive experience. It is a unique and unforgettable adventure that never relinquishes its hold on ad- renaline junkies – this may be a problem for women because they can only do the run once per year. // P e r s o n a l i n v i t a t i o n A Cresta Kiss - or a run?
