E X P E R I E N C E : W H A T ’ S O N d Lord Norman Foster ist ein Renaissancemensch, ein Univer- salgenie. In der Wüste von Abu Dhabi plante er mit seinen Partnern ein Stück Utopia: „Masdar City“, eine vollkommen CO 2 -neutrale Öko-Stadt. Nebenbei zeigt der Star-Architekt, wie er arabisch an- mutende Häuser bauen kann. In Paris schuf der Brite sich franzö- sisch in die Hauptstadt schmiegende Bauten. Will sagen: Foster passt sich an, erfasst dabei auf seine unvergleichliche Art die Wur- zeln einer Kultur und hebt sie dann mit Leichtigkeit in die Zukunft. Auch technisch ist er ein Visionär und stets auf dem neuesten Stand der Möglichkeiten. So wie auch in St. Moritz, wo er sich schon lan- ge wie ein Einheimischer fühlt. Der Cosmopolit kennt die Region genau. Seit 1993 nimmt er trotz seiner inzwischen 83 Jahre jährlich am Engadiner Ski-Langlaufmarathon teil. Und natürlich ist er stets sehr gern gesehener Gast in den Restaurants des Badrutt’s Palace. E I N M A N T E L A U S H O L Z Wie liebevoll Lord Norman Foster mit St. Moritz verwurzelt ist, zeigte er beispielsweise mit der Chesa Futura. „Kürbis“ nennen manche hier sein Apartmenthaus, das sich zum See hin wölbt, an- dere schwärmen vom traumhaften „Raumschiff“ – Foster ist lei- denschaftlicher Flieger. Beim Bau der Chesa Futura hat er nicht nur mit der biomorphen Form sowie den computergestützten 3-D-Ver- fahren bei der parametrischen Modellierung Maßstäbe gesetzt, er bezog auch die Engadiner Holzbau-Tradition mit ein. Die Außen- haut über der Glas- und Stahlkonstruktion besteht aus Lärchen- holz-Schindeln, rund 250.000 Stück wurden hierfür handgefertigt. Lärchenholz gehört zu den ältesten Rohstoffen des Engadins, es ist fast unverwüstlich, verändert jedoch seine Farbigkeit mit den Jah- ren: Erst scheint sie fast orange, dann verwandelt sie sich langsam in Silbergrau, je nachdem, wie Regen, Schnee und Lichteinfall mit dem Holz spielen. Der Mantel der Chesa Futura, fertiggestellt 2002, zeigt schon schöne Zeichen seiner Zeit, vom kupfernen Dach hin- ab silbrig schillernd, zum Boden hin noch weniger von der Natur gegerbt. Die Chesa Futura liegt nur einen kurzen, schönen Spaziergang entfernt vom Badrutt’s Palace. // e Lord Norman Foster is a renaissance man, a universal genius. In the desert of Abu Dhabi, he planned a slice of utopia with his partners: “Masdar City”, a completely CO2-neutral eco city. In doing so, the superstar architect illustrated his ability to design Arabian-influenced houses. In Paris, the Briton created buildings that blend effortlessly into the French capital. In other words, Foster adapts and – in the process – embraces the essence of a culture in his own incomparable fashion, transporting it with consummate ease into the future. Technically, he is also a visionary and always at the cutting edge of possibilities – as is the case in St. Moritz, where he has long felt like a native. This cosmopoli- tan knows the region intimately. Since 1993 – and despite having reached the grand old age of 83 – he has been taking part in the annual Engadin Skimarathon cross-country event. And naturally, he is always a welcome guest in the restaurants of the Badrutt’s Palace. A C O A T M A D E O F W O O D A prime example of the depth of Lord Norman Foster’s emotional attachment to St. Moritz is provided by Chesa Futura. “The pump- kin” is what some here call the apartment house which curves out towards the lake, while others enthuse about the incredible “space- ship” building – Foster himself is a passionate pilot. When desig- ning the Chesa Futura building, he not only set new standards with its biomorphic form and his use of computer-assisted 3D parametric modelling, but also incorporated traditional Engadin timber con- struction. The exterior skin over the glass and steel construction consists of around 250,000 hand-made larch shingles. Larch is one of the oldest raw materials in the Engadin region and, as well as being almost indestructible, also changes in colour over the years: it is initially almost orange before gradually transforming into a sil- very grey depending on the interaction of rain, snow and light with the wood. The skin of the Chesa Futura building, which was com- pleted in 2002, is already showing pleasing signs of its age, with the upper part of the building beneath the copper roof acquiring a silvery sheen, while the part closest to the ground is less weathered by the elements.
