e For ten years, the turn-of-the-century Villa La Vigie in Monaco was the home of the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. At the end of April 2017, a different exclusive audience was able to enjoy the opulent 600-m2 white building, high above the Mediterranean, for the first time: for four days, 13 prestigious galleries were permitted to place select collector’s pieces by renowned designers, artists and architects in every room and balcony and on the spectacular terra- ce. Entry was restricted to an exclusive list of guests, who came to enjoy contemporary carpets, lights, porcelain and furniture in a luxurious ambience and, in many cases, to buy on site. With this exclusive event by the name of NOMAD, Giorgio Pace and Nico- las Bellavance-Lecompte have created an innovative format which allows high-quality works to be displayed in a prestigious and in- timate setting rather than at a faceless art fair. The success of the premiere does not just mean that there will be another edition in 2018 in Monaco: NOMAD is being taken on the road and is to be staged in the vicinity of St. Moritz, too. More specifically, the event will take place from 8-11 February at Chesa Planta in Samedan – a stately former aristocrat’s house which today serves as a cultural centre and local history museum (nomadstmoritz.com) . G I O R G I O P A C E P R O J E C T S Giorgio Pace already has a special relationship with this part of Switzerland. In 2010, this cosmopolitan, who was born in 1969 in Italy, founded his company Giorgio Pace Projects in order to pro- mote contemporary art and design in St. Moritz and the Engadin region. The result was two exhibitions in the Chesa Planta: “A Lu- natic on Bulbs” with works by eight international artists and “Ma- gic Mountain” as a homage to the furniture design of Rick Owens. In 2015, Pace presented the experimental expedition “What Could Happen” for the three French artists Pierre Huyghe, François Ro- che and Camille Lacadée: during a journey on board a recom- missioned Alpine train, the passengers were part of a morbid and mysterious film, which took them to a huge sculpture on the Lej Nair glacier lake and back again. T H E T R A V E L L I N G D E S I G N F A I R Pace has steadily built up the necessary network for exciting protago- nists and an interested audience: an art lover since his youth, he stu- died visual arts administration alongside law at New York University and has worked for such prestigious institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Biennale in Ve- nice. In the media and advertising industry, he extended his expertise and contacts working on publications such as VMagazine, Visionaire, V Man, CR Fashion Book and Garage Magazine. Since 2013, he has also been drawing on all his experiences and connections in his consulting work for luxury labels such as Bulgari, Louis Vuitton and Moët-Hennessy. Giorgio Pace conceives and car- ries out events for these companies, which are tailored in painsta- king detail. And Pace loves to bring people together in private as well as for professional reasons: he receives and cooks for visitors on a regular basis in his apartment in St. Moritz, where works he has collected by contemporary artists hang. He doesn’t just select works by famous names such as Roni Horn or Kiki Smith, but also relies on his nose for up-and-coming talents and trends.
